In 1995 British disc jockey and journalist John Peel (1939-2004) said this about   "Trout Mask Replica" - a four sided LP album for which its producer Frank Zappa
gave Don Van Vliet (Captain Beefheart) total artistic freedom:
"If there has been anything in the history of popular music which could be described
as a work of art in a way that people who are involved in other areas of art would understand, then 'Trout Mask Replica' is probably that work."

You rarely find an album which lacks clichés and musical shortcuts, but "Trout Mask Replica" is one. Its unique music follows no "rules;" on the contrary it is among the most artistically creative, honest and free yet detailed and thought out albums to have been made in the history of music.
