 Frank Zappa
"Civilization Phaze III" (1994)
"Civilization Phaze III" is what Frank Zappa has referred to as an "opera-pantomime;" an idea that he started working on during the "Lumpy Gravy" era (1966-68,)
and that he managed to finish close to 30 years later with the help of the Synclavier, Ensemble Modern, and lots of compositional experience.
It was released as a finished product in 1994--a year after his passing--and ranks today as his greatest compositional achievement.
The music is performed mainly on the Synclavier, but also--in the second act--by Ensemble Modern who incidentally performed throughout the
"Yellow Shark" album (1993.)
When it comes to sound engineering this is the best sounding album I've ever heard; the experience of listening to this music through a good sound system with
professional headphones is indescribable (The 18 minute long "N-Lite" was recorded on more than 200 audio tracks - the result of the finished mix is amazing.) | Act One (CD 1):
